Electrical transport is one of the most fundamental physical features characterizing solid-state materials. Controllable electrical conduction in semiconductor has been utilized in the form of ‘transistor’, which enables the modern information society. And the new materials beyond ‘silicon’ have been investigated for the better performance of electronic devices. 2D materials (represented by metallic graphene, semiconducting MoS2, and insulating hexagonal BN) are one of strong candidates for emerging nanoelectronic technologies due to its atomically thin nature with extreme physical dimensions.

In a slightly different viewpoint other than transistor performance, we can use the device structure of field-effect transistor as a platform for modulating electronic properties of 2D materials under the influence of its environment. For example, quantum Hall effect in graphene field-effect transistor can work as a sensor detecting a phase-transition of other quantum materials in contact. And MoS2 transistors can be fabricated with ferroelectric insulators to form a ferroelectric- or negative-capacitance field-effect transistor. In addition, the combination of 2D materials with other quantum materials such as SrTiO3, LaAlO3 or Cr2Ge2Te6 can also make synergies to give nontrivial phenomena. In this talk, I’ll introduce the recent results of such trials using a 2D-material field-effect transistor as a tool to develop new functionalities of solid-state physics.
