Spintronics aims to utilize electron spin degree of freedom for device applications. This colloquium introduces the spin angular momentum dynamics in conventional spintronic devices and moves on to the more recent topic of spin-orbit coupled dynamics. In contrast to the widely spread belief that the orbital angular momentum is quenched in condensed matter, it will be illustrated that the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom plays a crucial role in the spin-orbit coupled dynamics. This illustration naturally leads to the investigation of the orbital angular momentum dynamics. It will be demonstrated that the orbital angular momentum exhibits rich dynamics even without the spin-orbit coupling and that the orbital angular momentum coupling with the crystal momentum is much stronger than the spin-momentum coupling. The final part of the colloquium will be devoted to a brief discussion on angular momentum dynamics of various elementary excitations in condensed matter.
