In engineering light-matter interactions, there exist almost infinite design freedom in the intermediate regime between perfect order and uncorrelated disorder. Although these degrees of freedom enable precise, flexible, and novel manipulation of light flows or localization, at the same time, this freedom hinders the deterministic and stable achievement of the target optical responses due to the absence of microstructural descriptors for the globally acceptable quantification of disorder and the nonlinear relationship between wave properties and material/structural parameters. The concept of “engineering disorder”, which is based on the differentiated control of wave properties by at least partly controllable design parameters in disordered potentials, allows for advanced functionalities in photonic devices. In this talk, I will introduce the concept of engineered disorder and the following independent control of wave properties, which has been intensively studied in the design of bandgap materials, the enhancement of wave transport, and the application of deep neural networks in disordered platforms. The concept of non-Hermitian and non-Euclidean photonics will also be briefly discussed.
