X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a method to examine the chemistry and local structural properties of materials by measuring the X-ray absorption coefficients with various incident X-ray energies. XAS can reveal the coordination structure for each atomic species, which can be utilized in identifying the complex atomic arrangements in nanoscale functional materials. In this talk, I will brief overview general principles of the XAS technique, emphasizing the nature of the short-range probe. And I will showcase some examples of applications to the various “dirty” nanoscale systems such as 1) metal-metal oxide interfaces for resistive switching memory, 2) Core-shell nanostructures, 3) oxide(or sulfide)/TiN for novel semiconductor-metal contact, etc., and 4) some amorphous oxide thin films.
