 Anomalous pressure-induced volume expansion in fullerene-cubane cocrystal

  In this presentation, I am going to introduce the observation of an anomalous pressureinduced volume expansion in fullerene-cubane cocrystal. Fullerene-cubane cocrystals have been synthesized, which consist of static cubane molecules and rotating fullerene molecules. Upon compression, the molecular configuration of cubane transform into low density structure, accompanying with energy release, leading to a lattice expansion of the cocrystal (1.8% in volume). We explain this anomalous compression behavior in the framework of charge transfer between fullerene and cubane. This work was elected as a Featured Article in JACS and highlighted as “Material that pushes back”
